Division of Technical and Vocational Education (DTVE)
About
Who We Are?
The Division of Technical and Vocational Education, formerly known as the St Vincent Technical College, is the branch of the SVGCC which specialises in the training and certification of students, with a focus in equipping learners with the relevant skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to prepare them for work in keeping with occupational standards. At the DTVE, learners are engaged in a combination of practical and theory based training which focuses on developing competence in a specific skill, while providing them with the foundation needed to pursue further studies if they so desire.
At the DTVE, we offer 15 full time Applied Associate Degree programmes and 2 full time Applied Certificate programmes across three Departments in two locations. The main campus is located at Arnos Vale, while the Hospitality and Maritime Training Institute at Diamond facilitates some practical sessions for students in the Department of Hospitality and Agriculture.
What is TVET?
What is the difference between an Associate Degree at DTVE and the Associate Degree at DASGS?
The DTVE offers Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degrees, while the DASGS offers Associate of Science (AS) Degrees. While both are two year degrees, the AAS is typically offered by technical or vocational colleges as they focus on scientific and technical areas of training, emphasising the applied nature of the discipline. The ability to perform a task competently is a key factor in AAS degrees, in addition to knowing how to perform the task. The AS focuses mainly on the theory of a specific discipline, usually in the humanities, science or business, without the competency based training focus.
In addition, final year students pursuing full time programmes at the DTVE undergo a 4 – 6 week industrial attachment at an organisation specialising in their field of study. This attachment helps to reinforce the training received over the two years, and provides students with the opportunity to apply their skills and develop professionally
Where are our graduates employed?
